What is global warming?

Global warming is the observed and projected increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. It is caused by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, in the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, causing the planet to become warmer than it would naturally be. Scientists predict that global warming will have a number of negative consequences, including more severe storms, rising sea levels, and shifts in species’ habitats.
